AV/AX Class

Above: AV159 in O'Connell Street operating route 123 from Drimnagh to Marino on Monday 21 April 2003. This bus is part of the batch of 185 AVs delivered in 2000.

The AV class are Dublin Bus' newest double-deckers. The class are Volvo B7TLDD low-floor with Alexander (Belfast&Falkirk) ALX400 bodywork and have Volvo D7C-215 engines with ZF4HP50 fully automatic transmission with integral retarder. Also ABS anti-lock brakes and ECS electronically controlled suspension. Also front disc brakes and rear S-cam brakes. All are single-door so as to give a proper layout. The first 5 were delivered in late August 2000 and started type-training of drivers at Ringsend and Phibsboro garages.

AV89-90 are in Wedding Bus livery, AV91-92 are in Sightseeing Tours livery for use on the Coastal Tours. AV115-129 have dual-doors with extra luggage capcity and are in Airlink livery . AV130 also has dual-doors and is in blue&cream livery as a spare and can usually be seen operating on the route 20B.

44 more of the class were ordered and delivered in 2001 and numbered AV186-229. In 2002 53 more were delivered and are numbered AV230-282. In 2003 79 more were delivered ths time with Transbus ALX400 bodies (Transbus being the new name for Alexanders) and are numbered AV283-362. They were deilivered in two batches AV283-330 and AV331-362. In 2004 36 more were delivered and were numbered AV362-398. These were the first new buses to be delivered in the new Yellow & blue standard livery. In 2005 50 more were delivered this time with Alexander Dennis ALX 400 bodies (Alexander Dennis having replaced Transbus) and were numbered AV399-448

Currently 200 more are being delievered, AX449-648. They are being reclassified AX to take into account certain changes that have happened to the build

Below: AV123 in O'Connell Street on 29 June 2003. It is one of 15 buses (AV116-130) delievered in 2000 for the Airlink service linking Dublin Airport with Dublin City Centre. These buses have bonded glazing, air conditioning, luggage racks and centre doors, unlike the the rest of the AV class with only have front entrance. AV130 however in is normal fleet colours and is a spare bus for the Airlink but can been seen on other routes daily.
